Contact Lenses and Sports: How to Make Them Work Together

Some sportsmen and women have visual impairments that necessitate prescription lenses to correct their vision.

Eyeglasses can be ideal for some occasions. However, they are not helpful during all sporting activities. They are cumbersome, limit peripheral vision, and can shatter. Contact lenses help those engaging in sports deal with the limitations of eyeglasses.

How to Make Use of Them

Contact lenses will stay in place as you play. However, that is not their only benefit in sports. There are many ways you can make contacts work for you in the sports world. These include:

Improving Peripheral Vision

You can enjoy a wide field of view with contacts, unlike eyeglasses. You do not have to turn your head to keep an eye on the ball or the other team. They allow you to have an impeccable peripheral vision that is critical to any sport. For example, you can have the defenders in your line of sight if you play soccer. Rugby players can also see when a tackle is coming without obstruction or distortion.

Visual Acuity

Visual acuity is critical in every sport. Although eyeglasses provide the same, they can fog up in some situations, making it hard to see. In contrast, contact lenses will help you see clearly without worrying about distortions. Tennis players can see the far side of the court. In cricket, you can see the ball leave the bowler’s hand. You can detect changes and keep your eyes on the ball as it meets the bat.

Improves Depth Perception

Eyeglasses can make it hard for athletes when accurately judging distance. It could be due to the thickness of the lenses or the object’s distance from the eye. In contrast, ultra-thin contact lenses do not present the magnification challenges of eyeglasses.

They also rest directly on the eye, making it easy to have proper depth perception. Depth perception is critical for athletes in basketball, tennis, golf, cricket, and many other sports. Thus, contact lenses will help you play better than eyeglasses.

Care and Storage

It is easier to take care of contact lenses than eyeglasses. Daily disposable lenses take away the worry of cleaning and storage. You can put on a fresh pair every day. Also, you can always carry extra contacts if something happens to them. You do not have to worry about expenses since it is cheaper to replace these.

Comfort

Contact lenses do not drop down your nose, restrict your view, or break. You can wear them with helmets, masks, and other sporting headgear without discomfort. Those in snow sports, cycling, and swimming can wear their goggles and enjoy comfort.

You can also add ultraviolet blocking to your contact lenses. It will protect your eyes from the harmful sun rays. Comfort is a big concern for sports personalities since it allows them to concentrate on their game.
